Back in 1505, the Ottoman Admiral Kemal Reis besieged the castle of the island with the help of three galleons and seventeen battleships, but failed to conquer it. He had another try in 1508 with more ships, but still no result. The legend says, that this time, the island was saved by the one and only surviving knight who was only 18 years old. He clothed women and children with the armor of the dead Knights and placed them in the ramparts of the castle, thus tricking the Ottomans who believed that the garrison was still strong. According to others, the Commander the Knights, Paolo Simone, had gathered the few inhabitants of the island and after dressing them up and armed them with the uniforms and weapons of the knights, he placed them in the ramparts of the castle in order to be distinguished from the Sea. When the Turkish ships approached and saw the castle full of the Knights, they fled without attacking.
